City Cycle Style

Fashion Designer, Sir. Paul Smith

City Cycle Style, a new exhibition by leading fashion photographer Horst A. Friedrichs and The City of London, will be displayed at The Royal Exchange from 28 September – 29 October 2011.

The collection captures 40 of the Capital’s most stylish cyclists on their two-wheeled transport of choice; from vintage and fixed-gear to classic lightweight and Pashley bicycles.

Cycling enthusiasts, The Rt. Hon The Lord Mayor of the City of London Alderman Michael Bear and Boris Johnson will be displayed alongside London’s style-setters including Sir. Paul Smith, the British fashion designer; Jonny Woo, Queen of London’s drag scene; Hazel Robinson, stylist to Madonna and one half of cutting edge fashion label House of Jazz and Jonathan Kelsey, shoe designer for Matthew Williamson, Mulberry and Hunter.

“From fashionistas to financiers, an increasing number of Londoners are taking to the saddle,” explains Friedrichs. “The bicycle is now being seen as a reflection of your own personality and fashion choices rather than a simple way to get around. I hope the exhibition will show London exactly how you can ride in style and encourage more people to start cycling.”

City Cycle Style is the second campaign by the City of London to champion cycling. In 2010, the City of London hosted the first cycle fashion show at Smithfield Market during London Fashion Week. Over 600 guests helped raise £12,000 for Re~Cycle, the charity which ships unwanted bicycles to Africa. This year, proceeds from the sale of each portrait will be donated to The Lord Mayor’s Appeal 2011, the charitable theme is ‘Bear Necessities – Building Better Lives’ which aims to help disadvantaged youngsters at home and abroad.

Pitmans, the award-winning law firm; Egelnick and Webb, the London design studio and Grange Hotels are sponsors of City Cycle Style. Key players from each company have also been photographed by Horst A. Friedrichs and will be displayed as part of the exhibition at The Royal Exchange.

The launch of City Cycle Style, Tuesday 27th September at The Royal Exchange                                                 The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Michael Bear, will host a private launch of City Cycle Style on 27th September at The Royal Exchange. This will be an invite only occasion with an auction of The Original Boris Bike, engraved with Boris Johnson’s signature to raise funds for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal 2011.

The Lord Mayor’s Appeal this year benefits Coram, the UK’s first ever children’s charity which continues to offer better chances in life to London’s children and young people from its original 1739 site in Bloomsbury, and RedR, a charity that trains engineers and other relief workers for international disaster relief.

The Lord Mayor comments, “City Cycle Style celebrates what is truly great about our Capital, it’s diversity and individuality. The exhibition will showcase London’s most stylish cyclists, including myself, whilst also raising funds for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal. I very much look forward to welcoming guests to the launch of City Cycle Style at The Royal Exchange to enjoy what I am sure will be a fantastic evening.”

City Cycle Style will be a 24 hour outdoor gallery on the east side or back entrance of The Royal Exchange from 28 September – 29 October 2011.
