Natural Beauty Photographs by Luke Foreman & Lisa Creagh

16 February – 26 March 2011

The Little Black Gallery is proud to present Natural Beauty: photographs by Luke Foreman and Lisa Creagh. Both photographers have been inspired by using natural forms yet have interpreted and executed them in contrasting ways.

Luke Foreman is a British born photographer who graduated from the London College of Printing and has
since worked in fashion and beauty photography. He said: “I've always found pictures say more than words. I can get lost in pictures, taking me to a place in my imagination that words cannot. Taking a picture always starts first in my head, seeing the picture first and then creating it into a physical prescence.

Photography has given me a different way of expressing and seeing the world. The shell series for me is a study of natures shapes. Nothing comes close to the beauty of the lines of shells. They exude elegance, peace and harmony with the environment. All these images were shot on plate film and hand processed and hand printed. No two prints are ever the same, they are one-offs, like the shells.”

Lisa Creagh is also a British born photographer who graduated from the University of Brighton where she produced her ‘The Instant Garden’ series. The series creates abstract patterns with beautifully lit still life elements. Creagh’s images are underpinned by algebra, whilst painstakingly handmade rather than massproduced.

She said: “I wanted to create something that’s designed to be looked at for a long time.” Working with shop-bought flowers, Creagh creates large carpet-like images that combine the language of photography with the ancient techniques of decorative arts. Digital manipulation is used to replicate the slow, painstaking construction used in lace or crochet, resulting in an artificial, but familiar image that is decorative and finely wrought, yet digital and modern.
