A snapshot of the 80’s by Chris Duffy

8th July – 6th August 2011

Since its launch last year, artisan continues to attract attention in North West London. The role of the gallery is to create a space which offers an opportunity for artists of many disciplines to showcase their work. artisan’s success has been its ability to keep changing and offering something different each month. This July artisan welcomes photographer and Chris Duffy to its walls.

The expression ‘born with a camera in his hand’ can readily be applied to Chris Duffy. Son of legendary 60’s photographer Duffy, Chris grew up with the godfathers of fashion photography David Bailey and Terence Donovan so it was inevitable that photography would have a huge influence on his life. After working as 3rd assistant in his father’s studio (making coffee, sweeping floors and being available 24/7), he finally graduated to become Duffy's right hand man. This gave Chris an extraordinary apprenticeship in every aspect of photography from a master who was exacting and a perfectionist.

Chris’s career has seen him work with the most famous of photographers and celebrities as he moved from stills to moving images and from London to Los Angeles working as a director of photography on commercials and pop promos. By 1997 London was calling and the new millennium saw Chris not only shooting stills and video but also embracing new IT technology and forming a successful new media company combining all these elements.

Helping his father Duffy revive his archive before he died was an exercise in critically evaluating images and it was through this process that Chris began to look at his own photography in a new way and it re-ignited a passion to produce his own work outside of commercial restraints.

When he started to work on material for this exhibition he soon realised that his back catalogue had not been seen since it was shot in the 80’s and upon taking a closer look he decided to present a snapshot of this era. Coincidently many 80's names have recently re emerged including Spandau Ballet, Sade, Steve Strange and Adam Ant (who is now currently back on tour). It appears that the time is now right for this retrospective set of images from an exciting era.
