'Ten Years After' photography by Derek Mossop

Gallery 1885 presents: ‘Ten Years After’ an exhibition of contemporary photography by Derek Mossop

The exhibition includes work from ‘In my vanilla life’, a series of photographic portraits taken at the moment of the subject’s orgasm, crystallising fluidity of expression and emotion in a euphoric moment.

“….an ambitious undertaking which, as Mossop points out, has precedent in classical and religious imagery and is related to varied cultural and philosophical issues concerning sexual identity, representation and human existence for the artist.” Magdalene Keaney, National Portrait Gallery

‘Odyssey’:
I photographed the world I found, often in minute detail, and from all angles, endeavouring to capture both the discarded old America and the excesses of an emerging new America. At times it became a precarious balancing act between disturbing content and seductive beauty.

I was accumulating the evidence of a decaying and vanishing America, documenting an ever-changing country and landscape.

‘Landscapes in Transition’:
My foremost interest with the landscape lies with the evidence of human presence and interaction with the environment rather than the landscape as pure spectacle. To view these landscapes is to enter an alternative world of possibilities; a psychological intensity is created through the resistance and tensions that exist between the man-made and the natural. The stark contrast between the human and the natural here moves the images through inordinate states of meaning.

The images evoke a post-apocalyptical world, the aftermath of some disaster, natural or otherwise.

Francis Hodgson, photography critic for the Financial Times, nominated the ‘Landscapes in Transition’ series for the prestigious 2010 Prix Pictet photography award.

“Your 'Landscapes in Transition' are quite wonderful. Odd and beautiful in just the right way.” Kathy Ryan, Photo Editor, The New York Times Magazine

Images from the ‘Landscapes in Transition’ series have been published in both Portfolio Magazine and The British Journal of Photography.
