Wendy Bevan: The Pain of Desire
Dreamlike femme fatales take centre stage in the artist’s first solo show
Exhibition: 17th June - 30th July 2011
In a collection of all new works, Wendy Bevan draws viewers into the dreamlike world of her mysterious femme fatales.
British artist Wendy Bevan will exhibit an entirely new collection of painterly femme fatales in her first UK solo show, opening June 17th at Cob Gallery, Camden.
Entitled The Pain of Desire, the exhibition will explore the theatricality of female desire, and the inner pain suffered through the pursuit of prescribed and aspirational notions of identity and success. At once beautiful yet haunting, nostalgic yet timeless, Bevan’s surreal staged moments are captured on Polaroid. Each hand-printed, Bevan’s intimate, otherworldly studies of mysterious female characters will be displayed in found, antique frames sourced by the artist, the frame an extension of the piece.
Bevan pursues a multi-disciplinary approach to her work. Alongside her photographic work, Bevan will also present a companion performance piece with her band Temper Temper. In a series of haunting vocal performances on the opening night and other selected nights throughout the exhibition, Bevan’s assumed character will interpret and respond to her photographic series and the emotions it portrays. Temper Temper’s recording DROWNING IN THE DAY will be available on limited release CD at the exhibition.
There will also be films showing that Bevan has collaborated on with artists’ Sayaka Maruyama and Tomihiro Kono. Each aspect of Bevan’s work informs each other, interlinking to create a diverse artistic tapestry.
