Peep Show: Bob Carlos Clarke

Cry Baby - Bob Carlos Clarke

London: 30 March - 14 May

The Little Black Gallery in London is staging the third part of a retrospective of work by Bob Carlos Clarke entitled Peep Show in which a selection of work spanning his 30 year career goes on display. The theme of this latest exhibition is informed by the controversy caused by the first two parts.

Images in Wall To Wall in 2009 and Full Throttle in 2010 drew complaints from local residents. “We were visited by the police on several occasions,” says Ghislain Pascale, Carlos Clarke’s former agent and a co-director of The Little Black Gallery. “This year to avoid a repetition, we are blacking out the main window and putting a peep hole for anyone who is interested in looking in."

The exhibition coincides with the announcement of the production of a film on the life and work of Bob Carlos Clarke by directors Bert & Bertie.

Bob Carlos Clarke was born in Cork, Ireland in 1950, and came to England in 1964 to study art and design at The West Sussex College of Art where he developed an interest in photography. He then went on to The London College of Printing, before completing his degree at the Royal College of Art in 1975. He worked in almost every sphere of photography, winning numerous awards for his high-profile advertising campaigns, recognition for his photojournalism and portraits of celebrities, and international acclaim from collectors of fine prints. He died in 2006 and is now recognised as one of Britain’s most important and collectable photographers.

The directors of the Little Black Gallery in London have launched a crowdfunding appeal to raise £75,000 to finance Dark Room, the Obsessions of Bob Carlos Clarke, a film about the work of the Irish photographer. Anyone donating at least £100 will be listed in the credits. More details at www.thelittleblackgallery.com
