Anders Petersen and JH Engström exhibit at National Media Museum
From Back Home, an award winning project by leading Swedish photographers Anders Petersen and JH Engström, will be on show in a free-of-charge exhibition at the National Media Museum in Bradford from 15 October 2010 to 27 March 2011.
In 2001, Petersen (b1944) and Engström (b1969) began a seven-year collaboration to photograph the Värmland, the central western area of Sweden where both men spent their formative years. Travelling into the heart of their subject, their potent and captivating photographs became an intense voyage of discovery into both the place and people that shaped them, and their associations with one another.
The body of work culminated in an award winning book and now, an exhibition, which the National Media Museum will be presenting for the first time in the UK.
Greg Hobson, Curator of Photographs at the Museum, said: “Combining the work of two photographers born a generation apart, yet reflecting on their shared identity, ‘From Back Home’ is a remarkable achievement. It elegantly demonstrates the power of photography to be intimate and personal, while accessible to the viewer.
“Neither photographer has attempted to make an objective portrayal of their homeland, instead they instinctively explore their memories; photographing friends and family, alongside people and places that connected with their own recollections of growing up.
“The resulting images are affectionate, sometimes brutal and sometimes funny, but binding both men’s work are threads of sadness and solitude; Petersen describing his recollections as ‘little hard memories of sad and lonely times’. It is this reflection of the memory’s ability to evoke such contradictory, yet complementary emotions that make ‘From Back Home’ so noteworthy.”
Petersen and Engström’s relationship was established in 1993, when Engström was an assistant to the elder photographer. Engström graduated from the influential Gothenburg School of Photography, where Petersen was later a Professor. Both photographers have received numerous awards and accolades, including both being individually short-listed for the prestigious Deutsche Borse Photography Prize and, in 2009, together winning the ‘Contemporary Book Award’ at the international photography festival Les Rencontres d’Arles in France.
