The Ancient Forest of Selwood Exihibition
The Ancient Forest of Selwood is attracting the attention of five well known artists and photographers, amongst them Don McCullin, war photographer, and BBC Wildlife presenter, Simon King.
Images taken of the Forest, in Somersets’ Frome and Bruton area, will be shown in a special exhibition to raise the profile of this treasured, but little known forest. Held in conjunction with the Somerset Wildlife Trust, the idea is to give local people the opportunity to find out more about how they can protect and enhance this stretch of land to benefit the landscape and wildlife that lives there, ultimately with a view to creating one of the Trusts’ Living Landscape Schemes here.
The Trust’s Director of Conservation Lisa Schneidau is enthusiastic about the project: “There is no reason why this landscape can’t once again be home to a patchwork of connected wildflower meadows and native woodlands grazed by native breeds of cattle; where the otter is once more abundant and the nightingale can be heard and where ponds and the headwater streams of the rivers Brue and Frome teem with wildlife.”
Together the five top artists and photographers, many of whom live in the area will put on this inspired exhibition: Internationally renowned Don McCullin brings his immense experience as a photojournalist to capturing trees in the local landscape; Rob Kessler who has been collaborating with botanical scientists at Kew will exhibit some of his unique photo-micrographs of pollen taken from trees in the Selwood Forest; Steven Drewetts’ photographs explore how veteran trees hold clues to the past; Venetia Dearden, well known for her photographs of people at Glastonbury Festival, includes local people in her landscape images and Simon King, OBE who lives near Bruton and is the patron of the Somerset Wildlife Trust will focus on woodland wildlife.
During the exhibition two related talks will take place at Bruton School for Girls: ON October 7th 7.30pm, ancient tree expert, Ted Green will speak on Trees past, present and future; on October 29th, 7.3opm Rob Kesseler will be talking about his extraordinary pollen images. Rob is a visual artist and Professor of Ceramic Art & Design at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design.
Tickets are £7.50 and can be bought online www.somersetwildlife.org or send a cheque to Patricia Stainton, Cooks Farm, North Brewham, Bruton, Somerset BA10 0JQ with a stamped addressed envelope stating which talks you would like to attend.
The exhibition runs from 28th September – 30th October. At the Chapel, High Street, Bruton, Somerset BA10 0AE
