Jo Brooks - The founder of JBPR
The right advice and inside track on how to get commissioned
What type of clients do you represent and what is their expectation of what you can do for them?
Our client base is completely diverse from a vegetarian food brand to the journalist Krishnan Guru-Murthy, from artists to hotels and restaurants.
What role does photography play in your conversations with clients?
For JBPR photography plays a vital role in the public face of our clients and if the answer to the question is no we don’t have any good images the first thing on our agenda would be to commission photography.
Do you feel that your clients have strong ideas about how they want to be represented photographically?
Not always, if not we tend to use our skills in finding the best possible angles that we know that will generate media interest. Some of our clients however supply us with images which have made front pages of the nationals!
Do you work with a core group of photographers?
Yes and no - we are always on the lookout for fresh and innovative photographers -with the shift towards more on-line news feeds, sometimes the more traditional images are not suitable.
How do you find new photographers to work with?
Mainly by word of mouth or if we have been impressed by current work - as our job takes us around the world - we are always coming across random people who sometimes surprise us with the quality of their images. The days
of Tony Stone Worldwide are long gone!
Do you think that photographers understand your role in the commissioning process as a middle man between them and the client?
No, the photographer doesn’t always realise that we are the driving force behind lobbying pictures desks on their behalf - after all, our story and our client then would not be featured.
And what advice would you give to a photographer trying to built a commercial client base?
Offer to cover an event for free and if the images make it - you will be used again and again and again!
