The Facts:
Diane Arbus was born into a wealthy, Jewish family. She married her childhood sweetheart Allan Arbus in 1941 and they began a commercial photography business. Arbus took classes with Berenice Abbott and studied under Lisette Model between 1955 and 1957. Arbus began to devote herself fully to documenting transvestites, twins, midgets, people on the streets and in their homes and asylum inmates.

Diane and Allan divorced in 1969 after being separated for 10 years. She suffered from severe depression and ended her life in July, 1971. She was 48 years old.
