Born: Washington, D.C in 1953
Areas of Expertises: Fine art, Documentary
The Facts:
Nan Goldin grew up in a upper-middle-class Jewish family. After her sister committed suicide aged 19, Goldin enrolled at the Satya Community School in Boston. It was where a teacher first introduced Goldin to photography in 1968. Her first solo show was held in Boston in 1973 and was based on her photographic journeys among the city's gay and transsexual communities. This was the beginning of a lifetime obsession of portraying images of love, gender, domesticity, and sexuality. She graduated from Tufts University in 1978, where she had worked mostly with CIBA chrome prints and moved to New York City. The Pompidou Centre, Paris, held a major retrospective of her work in 2002. She currently lives in Paris and London.
