Meisel’s fascination for beauty and models started at a young age. He majored in illustration at Parsons The New School for Design and was obsessed with models such as Twiggy, Veruschka, and Jean Shrimpton. His first photography job was shooting at Seventeen magazine.

Meisel is credited with "discovering" the careers of many successful models, such as Iris Strubegger and Lisa Cant and is a working legend within the fashion industry.
