The emergence of new Hybrid Digital SLR cameras such as the Canon EOS 5DMK2 and Canon EOS 7D has brought together the two disciplines of photography and movies in an a way that is challenging every aspect of visual language.
The ability to shoot HD with DSLR cameras using an array of prime and zoom lenses has changed the way that film-makers are thinking about their work. After years of being told big is best, we now can see small is indeed more beautiful and better as DSLR’s propel today’s storytellers to think out of the box and find an instant route to their vision.
The economic challenges faced by modern cinema has found some salvation in a new technology that defies budget and delivers an artistic freedom that has long been lost to the accounts department.
Converge.One is the first in what will be series of events presented by the people who matter most; the creative community.
Those who make this work will show how they were empowered and inspired to make the best use of these new exciting digital tools.
Photographers and Filmmakers will present case studies of their most recent work and break down the idea, the process, and the various tools used to embrace the convergence of these once thought different disciplines.
There will be a “round table” discussion involving both the creators and users of the media showing how this convergence is changing how the industry works.
Students from FDMX will be challenged to make a short film to a brief before the event, edited on shown on the day.
Canon UK will present a short seminar on technology and products that are relevant to the convergence.
The Delegate Centre will have a selection of trade stands showcasing stills and video products from the best known names in the industry such as Zacuto, Marshall, Glidecam, Litepanels and many more.
Converge.One will capture the need for productions to move faster, be more maleable, and still deliver high production values that will sit comfortably on a cinema screen.
The challenge facing everyone is daunting but the creative opportunity’s made available through this new technology is the start of a new way of thinking about how to produce a stunning end product that finds an audience at the right price.

For the past 5 years writer director Richard Jobson has been working on converging moving image with stills. Award winning films such as 16 Years of Alcohol and A Woman in Winter alongside the short I AM DIGITAL have broken new ground using small budgets to create high production value. The introduction of the Canon 5D MK11 to the market place has been the answer to a dream and is now being used by the director on high profile projects such as the sex trafficking docudrama THE JOURNEY with Emma Thompson as well as upcoming feature film HELTER SKELTER. Jobson will explain how the camera along with software such as Final Cut Pro and After Effects has re-defined what is possible in cinematic terms with limited resources. He will give a real insight into how the camera is redefining the way film makers think about their work and how the work flow is simple and clear. He says “This is all about being inspired and understanding the incredibly liberating feeling of creating striking visual images without worrying about the cost.”
Jobson will show his work; the process he goes through to attain high-end visual imagery; and an insight into how to create an ambitious narrative that suits a small budget using this new breakthrough technology.
Seamus McGarvey BSC, began his career as a still photographer before attending film school at the University of Westminster in London.
On graduating he began shooting short films and documentaries, including Skin, which was nominated for a Royal Television Society Cinematography Award, and ATLANTIC, directed by Sam Taylor-Wood, nominated for the 1998 Turner Prize.
He also photographed and directed over 100 music videos, for such artists as U2, The Rolling Stones, PJ Harvey, Robbie Williams, Sir Paul McCartney, Dusty Springfield and Coldplay. In 1998, the British Society of Cinematographers invited McGarvey to join.
In 2004 he was awarded the Royal Photographic Society’s prestigious Lumiere medal for contributions to the art of cinematography. His credits as a cinematographer include Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center, starring Nicolas Cage, The Hours, directed by Stephen Daldry, starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore, for which he earned the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Technical/Artistic Achievement; the action-adventure film Sahara, starring Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz, for which he won the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Cinematography; Along Came Polly, starring Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston; High Fidelity, directed by Stephen Frears, starring John Cusack; Wit, starring Emma Thompson, directed by Mike Nichols; Enigma, directed by Michael Apted; The War Zone; Butterfly Kiss; The Winter Guest; The Actors; A Map of the World; Charlotte’s Web; Atonement, for which he has received an Academy Award nomination (2008), an ASC Best Cinematography nomination,a BAFTA nomination (2008) and the Technical Achievement award in the Evening Standard British Film Awards for 2007 and won the 2008 Irish Film and Television Award for Best Cinematography.
He shot The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency directed by the late Anthony Minghella. In January 2008 he photographed The Soloist for director Joe Wright in Los Angeles. He recently completed Nowhere Boy for Sam Taylor-Wood.
For ten years Glasgow based animation studio Axis have been working on a broad range of animated projects for both entertainment and commercials. They have been involved in the convergence of graphic novel stylings and television with the multi award winning short film Codehunters and the Renault Clio commercial 'Animals' both directed by Ben Hibon. The studio has also seen much convergance with their involvement in the video game industry where the influences of movies, graphic novels and television all meet interactive entertainment. The studios most successful video game trailers have been distributed widely accross the online communities clocking up over a million downloads from one single web portal alone. Digital content and distribution mean everything to Axis and our current collaboration with Richard Jobson and Emma Thompson on The Journey is the culmination of many of our previous experiences and influences both in production process and visual style.

David has been with Apple for 14 years and joined the company in its South African Office. In this time he has moved to The UK, France and back to The UK. In his time with Apple he has been closely involved in the Publishing side of the business and was moved into the video group right at the beginning of Apples Push into this segment. He has been a key player in this group from the first version of Final Cut Pro rigt up to the present version and has seen first hand the changes in this market and the growth of this product right to the way through to where it is today as the ultimate choice for the Video Professional.
Prior to Apple he has worked in the reseller channel and IT distribution and now lives between London and his home in Switzerland.
Drew Gardner is an award-winning London based photographer. His work is diverse with a strong narrative encompassing group portraiture to photographing beautiful and extraordinary people on location and in the studio.
He has a burning passion for photography and people getting the very best from any given situation. He shoots for editorial, and corporate advertising accounts and lectures in advanced digital photography and lighting techniques in the USA, Europe and the Middle East
He has travelled worldwide as a photojournalist photographing people as diverse as the Bushmen of the Kalahari to the street children of Romania.
Drew , who marks his 30th anniversary as a photographer this year, has a picked up a host of international awards for his trademark epic location and fashion shoots.More recently he shot the latest print and video advertising campaign for The Suzuki Swift

ANDY BAKER - Mofilm

Andy began MOFILM with Ralph & Jeffrey after delivering the pioneering Sundance Global Short Film Festival for Mobile in collaboration with the GSM Association, which first saw world-famous filmmakers produce made-for-mobile films. Andy was previously CEO at grounding breaking digital media company DX3, an early pioneer of downloadable music. He has also managed international licensed music and content for service providers globally, with a particular interest in mobile and the African market. Andy has held senior management positions at Mediawave, WebTV, Energis and Cable and Wireless. Andy served in the Royal Signals within the British Army and is a graduate from Leeds Metropolitan University in Communications.
Danfung Dennis graduated from Cornell University with degrees in Applied Economics and International Agriculture in 2005. He worked briefly for a business consulting organization. He began his photojournalism career by freelancing for the Beijing Bureau of The Associated Press covering breaking news throughout Asia. In 2006, he traveled to Afghanistan to cover the increase in fighting and lack of reconstruction and development. He spent much of 2007 and 2008 covering Iraq. Now based in London, he will focus his future work on documenting wars, conflicts and critical social and economic issues.
His work has been published in Newsweek, TIME, The New York Times, The Times, The Sunday Times, The International Herald Tribune, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The Sunday Times Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post Magazine, Le Figaro Magazine, Financial Times Magazine, Mother Jones, L'Express, Der Spiegel, The Sydney Morning Herald, and the Wall Street Journal and his footage aired by PBS, ITV, and CBS.
On July 2nd, 2009, 4000 US Marines of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade launched a major helicopter assault into an insurgent stronghold in the Helmand River Valley in southern Afghanistan to break a military stalemate that had been reached with the Taliban.
Danfung Dennis was embedded with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Company, as they were dropped 18km behind enemy lines to seize a key bridge. Within a few hours of landing, fierce fighting erupts and continues for the next three days, in which Lance Corporal Charles Sharp, from Adairsville, Georgia was was shot and killed by a Taliban fighter.
After the initial fighting, the Marines search for the insurgents that killed Lance Corporal Sharp. Frustration sets in as the Marines try to fight a ghost like enemy and IED's cut them off from resupply. The Marines objective is to secure and protect the population, but the Afghan villagers complain that the fighting has driven them into desert, bombing has destroyed their homes, and intrusive raids disrespect their culture. Trying to balance their roles between warriors and statesmen, the Marines struggle to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people.
