Angered Big Fat Gypsy Wedding photographer speaks out

Big Fat Gypsy Wedding photographer speaks out

The campaign photographer behind Channel 4’s Big Fat Gypsy Wedding images has spoken out about an advertising watchdog’s decision to ban two of the programme’s adverts.

French-born Elisabeth Blanchet, who won work with the TV channel for her photojournalism portfolio documenting Travelling communities, revealed how broadcasters branded the slogan 'Bigger. Fatter. Gypsier.' across her photographs without permission, sparking public uproar.

The posters of a young boy and two young girls were banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) yesterday for being 'offensive and irresponsible' following 372 complaints from the public.

Elisabeth said: "I am happy with the ASA decision although it puts me in a very uncomfortable situation. I was happy with the photos I provided to Channel 4 but without my consent, they clearly misused them by adding this horrible slogan "Bigger. Fatter. Gypsier." on them.

“They also cropped and reversed the photo of the two girls and therefore took it out of its party context. I am glad Channel 4 didn't get away with it."
