Call for applications for the second Tim Hetherington Grant
World Press Photo and Human Rights Watch invite press photographers and photojournalists around the world to apply for the second Tim Hetherington Grant where they can receive support for completing an existing project on a human rights theme.
The deadline for submissions is 15 November, and the name of the recipient of the grant will be announced on 10 December.
First edition, 2011
Last year, the American photographer Stephen Ferry received the first Tim Hetherington Grant for his project ’Violentology: A Manual of the Colombian Conflict' that focuses on the history and current dynamics of the war in Colombia, while exposing the role of the distinct parties in the conflict. It was chosen by a selection committee from among 222 applications by photographers of 56 nationalities.
Judging
World Press Photo and Human Rights Watch will join a panel of judges to select the beneficiary of the second annual Tim Hetherington Grant. The 2012 selection committee will consist of:
- Marcus Bleasdale, documentary photographer, VII Photo Agency
- Carroll Bogert, deputy executive director for external relations, Human Rights Watch
- James Brabazon, journalist and documentary filmmaker
- Whitney C. Johnson, director of photography, The New Yorker
- Michiel Munneke, managing director, World Press Photo
Secretary: Adriaan Monshouwer, founder, Picture Inside.
Grant
The annual grant, worth € 20,000, will be awarded to a photographer to complete an existing project on a human rights theme. The judges will look for the qualities that defined Tim’s career when reviewing the applications: work that operates on multiple platforms and in a variety of formats; that crosses boundaries between breaking news and longer-term investigation; and that demonstrates a consistent moral commitment to the lives and stories of the photographic subjects.
Application and selection
The application process is open to all professional photographers who have participated in a World Press Photo competition between 2008 and 2012.
The deadline for applications is 15 November. The selection committee will convene in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and will pronounce the name of the recipient of the grant on 10 December.
The Tim Hetherington Grant is a joint initiative of World Press Photo and Human Rights Watch and was created to celebrate the legacy of the photojournalist and filmmaker Tim Hetherington killed in Misrata, Libya in April 2011.
