Fujifilm Student Award curator's choice announced

Adam McGhee

The 2013 Fujifilm Student Award has announced the winner of the November curator’s choice as Falmouth student Adam McGhee.

Adam is a student at the University of Falmouth and his image, featured above, was chosen for its vivid colours and composition. Adam shot the image on a Fujifilm Superia XTra 400.

To read Adam’s reaction about being picked, and for more information about the competition, please read the press release below from Fujifilm.

Press release:

Adam says, “I travelled to Glasgow to document how the urbanised cityscape has affected the social behaviour in the city, most noticeably within the Gorbals and Rutherglen districts.”

He continued, “I chose to shoot my image using Fujifilm Superia XTra 400 film due to its richness of colour and the way the film reacts to over exposure, whilst using a Canon EOS Rebel 2000 with a Sigma Zoom 28-105mm 1:2.8-4 and HOYA UV Filter.”

Steve Macleod, Creative Director for Metroprint and Metro Imaging said, “The image has a strong composition and I also like the way the colour relates to the subject, drawing you into the work. It interests me to see more work from this photographer.”

Adam receives a 12x16 print of his winning image by the online arm of expert professional photographic printers Metro Imaging, Metroprint - as well as a place in the final exhibition.

The Fujifilm Student awards are open to all students in the UK, not just those undertaking courses involving photography. This decision was taken following several requests from students who are keen photographers but not actually studying photography.

The theme for this year's award is 'The Colour Of....' with students being asked to capture an image that illustrates how colour lights up their world. All images must be taken on Fujifilm Professional film and submitted via fujifilmstudentawards.co.uk - entry is free and students can enter as many photographs as they wish.

In addition to being named Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year 2013, the overall winning image will feature in an exhibition to be held in London next summer, as well receiving a professionally produced folio of prints and a one-to-one printing/consultancy session with one of Metroprint's top printers and also £200 worth of film from Fujifilm. The college or university that submits the most entries will win £200 worth of Fujifilm Professional film.
