New photography book: Painted Bodies
A new photography book entitled Painted Bodies will be out next month.
Following Africa Adorned and African Ceremonies, renowned photographers Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith have focused on the traditions of body painting spanning the vastly unique cultures of the African continent.
Drawing from expeditions in the field and from firsthand experiences with African people and cultures over the past thirty-five years, Painted Bodies: African Body Painting, Tattoos, and Scarification is a celebration of the expressiveness and imagination of African cultural painting on the human body.
The book covers more than twenty geographical locations across Africa and includes more than 250 photographs of body paintings of the Surma, Karo, Maasai, Himba, and Hamar peoples, among others.
Beckwith and Fisher said, “Our fascination with the art of body painting began twenty-five years ago in Ethiopia when we first visited the Surma during courtship season. African body painters recreate themselves daily without the taboos and boundaries we associate with the naked body. The art of body painting is a celebration — life affirming, transforming, spontaneous and a signature of being alive.”
