PRs don’t understand the power of photography

There is an interesting piece in ‘Housewares’ magazine this month (July 2008) in which Danielle Proud from the Sunday Times ‘Style’ magazine talks about how PR companies can get better penetration of their releases in magazines.

Not a usual read you might think, and hardly an interesting subject, but I would have to disagree. I talk to Journos all the time who bemoan the onslaught of drivel they complain about getting from PR Companies.

She makes some interested observations about photography:

“I receive at least 100 releases a day by e-mail. If I see the same releases coming to me again and again, once I know the e-mail address, I’ll probably stop looking at them.

Of those 100, three will be relevant, and I’ll reply to them, requesting a picture. And I must stress: if journalists are interested in your product, all they really need is a very good photograph of it. You can send me a press release with 100 different pictures on it but, if they’re not decent photographs, I can’t use them. So a product that may have gone into the magazine is instantly out”

So there is at least one journo out there who knows her stuff, lets hope that lots of our clients also read ‘Housewares’ magazine.
