How do I sell images to magazines?
Hi Both,
Getting published is the easy bit, getting paid for it is what takes the skill.
There is no easy way, no guaranteed way. You learn as you go along.
My advice would be research the market you wish to sell to. read the magazines/newspapers etc intensly. Get to learn what the editor likes, and what he or she prefers. magazines such as Professional Photographer (for example) have a particular house style, usually quite different from their rivals.
Quality is everything, presentation is important, and you just have to know what you are talking about.
Whilst photos and the written word are different in the way that you present them to magazines there is not so much difference.
Make it relevant, make it something that the editor will want.
Present your work in a way that makes it desirable.
I sold my first photos when I was fifteen to local papers and rugby magazines. It is probably more difficult to start up now, so you really do have to know your stuff.
I have always said that it is relatively easy to turnover £2000 a year selling photos, making a living at it is however very hard.
Reading magazines such as Professional Photographer won't tell you all the secrets, but should certainly give you a head start.
Kind regards
