Post Subject: 40D 'blurred' images

All, Have any of you experienced an issue with images from a 40D shot below about 250th of a sec? I have had two 40Ds (one of them having been repaired twice) and I am still getting this problem. I can shot a 1/6th of second hand held with my 5D and get much better results that I can at 1/200 with the 40D. I am contemplating taking this one back as I do not feel that it is of any use to me - anyone else having problems?

Can't say I have at that speed. Get blur at around 1/80 but then I am getting older. Use the IS and sharp at 1/60 hand held. Also had mine in for repair after 100 shots. Took a month to get it back.

Well Canon did recall the ID mkIII due to sensor alignment issues - there's a fair amount of speculation about the IDs mkIII and the 40D also having issues, though this is not officially confirmed by Canon. If you're under warranty then certainly return the camera and request calibration/a replacement. If you're experiencing issues, then Canon essentially have to sort the issue for you. Ian Farrell (Pro magazine editor) and Will Cheung (editorial director) have both had similar issues, so it's worth reporting.

Hi I am a pro photographer using Canon 1ds Mark II's and III's for my general work. I bought a 40D and just could not get a sharp picture from it at any speed - I did try a second 40d but that had the same trouble. Not sure if I was just unlucky but in my opinion my old tatty 10D delivered sharper images. The reason for increased blurring at lower shutter speeds might have something to do with there being more pixels in a smaller sensor - so any subject movement or camera shake will be seen more prominently. This is also apparant in the Ds III ove the Ds II.Hope I have helped in some way. basically - buy a Nikon D3 (only joking.. not really..actually, Yes, just buy one. as Tony the Tiger says "they're greaaaaatt"

Thanks to Mr Riley for some worthy comments. That's certainly not the first time I've heard a pro take preference of a Canon 1D mkII over the mkIII...! It seems in recent times Canon have been suffering a few production issues (though not official except for the 1D mkIII recall) including the 40D. Get it 'fixed' and if it's still crap then return it with your reasons why and invest in another system.

Hello, Actually I think the Ds Mark III is much better than the Mark II in most departments. it is a very evolved camera and after 15000 frames I am really starting to feel the love.

All, Thanks for you help on this one and for confirming my suspicions. So it has to go back and try again. I'll let you know how it goes.
