Equipment you will need
Camera
Obvious we know. But choosing the right tool for the job is important. Shooting horse jumping requires accurate focus tracking and good continuous frame rates. Shooting people doesn't, but it does need a fast standard zoom, like this 17-55mm f/2.8 from Nikon.
Lights
Two or three flash heads should be fine - one to light the background, the other two fitted with softboxes to light your subjects. Wireless flash triggers are a great bonus too, but go for radio frequency types as slaves will be triggered by anyone using a compact camera nearby.
Laptop
Shoot tethered to a laptop and save yourself the bother of downloading files. Consider an extra LCD screen for customers to view pictures on. You'll want something nippy to process pictures on the go.
Dye-sub printer
Dye-sub printers are the way forward for event shooters. Get good quality pictures very quickly and at a low unit cost. They can be hired or bought outright.
