Canon announces the EOS 5D Mark II

Canon has at last released a successor to the Canon EOS 5D.
The EOS 5D Mark II, which comes in a magnesium alloy shell almost identical to its predecessor’s, features a newly designed 36x24mm CMOS sensor, with Digic 4 processor, delivering 21-megapixel resolution.
It also offers improved ISO sensitivity over the original EOS 5D, ranging from 100-6400, and expandable to 50, 12800 and 25600.
A nine-point autofocus system is supported by six additional invisible Assist AF points, located inside the unit’s spot-metering circle.
The EOS 5D Mark II camera is faster, too, capable of capturing a burst at 3.9 frames-per-second (fps) for up to 310 frames in JPEG mode, or 13 in Raw.
“About bloody time,” says Mark Ashworth, a wedding and portrait photographer near Cambridge. He shoots with the 5D and has been poring over the specs of the new model. “Bit of a shame they have done anything with the focusing system is all.”
Ashworth is in the market for a new camera but says he may make the switch to Nikon because he suspects the D700 has sharper image quality.
The camera's list price is £2,299 for body only.
