Google is to host more than 10 million images from the Life magazine’s photographic archive.
The images are available for free on a dedicated Google website and both Life and Google claim 97% of these images have never been seen before.
The collection, detailing American history from the 1860s until the 1970s, already contains thousands of pictures. Many have remained locked away in the form of negatives, slides, glass plates, etchings, and prints. Google will add additional digitized images over the next few months.
“Today about 20 percent of the collection is online; during the next few months, we will be adding the entire LIFE archive,” said the company in a statement.
The collection contains iconic images of the 20th century including works from photojournalists such as Alfred Eisenstaedt, Margaret Bourke-White, Gordon Parks, and W. Eugene Smith.
Prints of the images are available through the website: images.google.com/hosted/life
