Olympus & Panasonic announce Micro Four Thirds system

Micro Four Thirds

Olympus and Panasonic have created a "Micro Four Thirds Standard" of camera technology that they say will allow them to make interchangeable-lens cameras that are smaller and lighter than the Four Thirds products already on the market. "The Four Thirds System offers compact, lightweight performance, and the new Micro Four Thirds System will take this even further by making it possible to develop ultra-compact interchangeable lens-type digital camera systems," Olympus and Panasonic said in a written announcement this week. The Micro Four Thirds cameras will have a mount-to-sensor distance that is about 50% shorter than that of Four Thirds cameras, and the outer diameter of the lens mount will be 6mm smaller. The two companies have agreed to work together to create commercial products that meet the new standard. Olympus said it will continue to develop its Four Thirds range.
